Passy was an independent commune until 1860, and it still shows. The administrative quartier of La Muette covers the territory of the old village, which had grown from the 1830s into a small town before being absorbed into Paris. What remains are cobbled lanes, finely built private mansions, gardens you would never guess at from the street, and a shopping street — rue de l'Annonciation — where you buy your groceries as you would in a provincial town. It is the only part of the 16th where you live in a village without leaving the capital.

The Passy cemetery, where Manet and Claude Debussy lie, occupies the high ground near the Trocadéro.
