Petit Bayonne was once the Bourgneuf: the town overflowing, in the thirteenth century, onto the right bank of the Nive. Charles VII had the Château-Neuf built there after taking Bayonne back from the English in 1451, and the seventeenth-century fortifications closed the triangle, with the Porte de Mousserolles on the Adour side. The quarter fits within a few hundred metres, and that is its whole charm: you step out, follow the half-timbered fronts reflected in the Nive, and settle on a terrace as the sun drops over the quays. The Basque museum is round the corner, Les Halles across the bridge.
Older blocks with small footprints, often narrow and tall, a few half-timbered houses along the Nive. Floor areas are more contained than in Grand Bayonne and condition varies widely: here more than anywhere, two neighbouring addresses bear no comparison.
